Apparently Not Everyone In the Diabetic Community Understands...

I wrote an article for Diabetes Health recently titled "Yes, I Can Eat That" about the discrimination I face about dietary choices.  Apparently not everyone in the diabetic community understands that our team mascot includes cupcakes because...WE CAN EAT THEM!  I received some comments that require that I develop a thicker skin.  Some actually suggested that I shouldn't eat "toxic" food and that injecting more insulin was improper, some suggested that I should hide my diabetes from others, and some, were absolutely wonderful.  Please see the link below for the article and comments.

  1. Great article first of all. Those comments piss me off too, as a mother of a type 1 I am tired of explaining he CAN eat that. We all need insulin to process food whether its 50gc of pasta or cake it needs insulin! Shit cake is easier to bolus for here!

I believe a lot of those comments were type 2s who aren't on insulin. A cupcake is not going to change the fact that you're insulin dependent. Why not enjoy the boplus worthy foods?

You eat those sweets girly and rock the bgs after :)

  2. I just read your article and thought it was terrific. I'm sorry your coworkers have been so irritating, insulting and ignorant. And the comments on the article? Well, some were downright ugly and off base. The diabetes police can stick it! Yes, you *can* eat that!!! You keep eating those treats! We went to Dairy Queen today and you know what? Jack enjoyed every delicious carb in his cone!!!

  3. I can't even begin to tell you how frustrated and irritated I felt reading some of those comments! It was a brilliant article Meagan - you CAN eat that, regardless of what anyone says. I am! :) x

  4. theres so much ignorance surrounding diabetes. its infuriating. nobody thinks about the fat-ass who is stressing out his system and giving it overload with all the twinkies and cupcakes he also shouldnt be eating 12 of in a sitting, but because his body produces its own insulin to cover it, its no big deal, right? arrrggghhH!

  5. Ah WOW...your well-written article stirred-up a debate over there! UGH. It is frustrating. I have ran into some ignorance here and there in the community. I know Joe will throughout his life-time. Luckily, I think Joe has a thicker skin than his mom. :)

  6. I think your article was terrific and I hope it will clear up the misconceptions for a lot of people. I'm also sorry that some people insist on holding on to their know-it-all views, even when they are wrong. Don't let them rain on your parade . . . . or on your cupcake!!

  7. Wow... I hadn't read that before. First of all, nice job on the article. Totally agree with everything you wrote. As far as the comments, I think it's just a symptom of having so many diverse members of this community mixing things up and not understanding the point, not "getting it." Yes, maybe in some ways it's "safer" to not reveal health info or talk openly about it. You can avoid the D-police in that way. But no one should feel as thought they have to hide their diabetes. We deserve to live our lives, and D-Lives, on our own terms; not be dictated by others' beliefs or stupidity. Great job on the article, Meagan.

  9. I think people forget that all things are relative. Sure it's probably healthier on our bodies if we don't feed it junk but can having a little of what we really enjoy going to be a good thing if it makes us happy? I think so! Sometimes the healthiest thing for me to do is to relax, have some chocolate and enjoy life. Other days I know I need to eat my salad. Don't worry about the criticism, people just HAVE to say something and make their points and in the meantime many have clearly missed yours. Great job on the post and try not to let the comments get you down :) You rock!

  10. Okay I have to first say Kuddos to you! My daugther is only 15 years old and has been fighting this disease for 8 year now. She is very strong willed and has a mouth to go along with her attitude about informing people what she can and can't eat. That is why she is determined to educate people of this disease. I think it is 100% wrong to have to "hide" the fact that you have diabetes. My daughter wants everyone to know she has type 1. She had a family member comment once, we had been running around all day and didn't eat much. So we had kind of a junk food snack dinner. :-) He made a comment "Wow, for a diabetic you sure eat a lot of junk". LOL! I guess he just thought she ate that way everyday! But comments like that just make her laugh. Keep up the good work. I think you all standing up and being brave to educate people will only help the ignorant people not make comments like these anymore. Sorry so long, I'm just a passionate mom!

  15. The elevated importance of patient satisfaction data means that as the data is digested, more and more questions will arise. For instance, a survey will tell you there is a concern with the friendliness of the radiology staff. jimmy johns diabetes
